“Different Worlds” presented by Elisabet Ney Museum

August 1 – September 9, 2019

“Presented by the Elisabet Ney Museum in conjunction with FotoATX, this solo exhibition by Leslie Kell features her photographic compositions that prismatically distort the worlds around us revealing multiple levels of reality. The centerpiece is a specially created triptych that mirrors the museum’s rich history and honors the vibrant spirits that fill the space. Leslie offers a view that can only be experienced by stepping into this different world.”

What an honor it has been to share the walls of the Elisabet Ney Museum.

When I was invited to exhibit in FotoATX my first reaction was, I’m not a photographer. But then I came to the realization that in fact I am and have been for most of my life. So I decided to make the photography center stage in this exhibit. I also wanted to honor the rich historical space, so I set about designing the exhibit for the space.

Entrance to “Different Worlds”

I really wanted to create a different world when you step into the room. The centerpiece of this exhibit is a specially created triptych that mirrors the museum’s rich history and honors the vibrant spirits that fill the space.

“Different Worlds” installationThis piece was a true labor of love and I am so grateful to have been given access to all the nooks and special places in the museum, including the sculpture.

“Different Worlds” site specific triptych

In the design, I used a symbolic representation of Waller Creek that runs behind the museum as well as my signature archways and passages. As I was creating the drawing I kept sight of the final destination. Originally, I had a piece that would go on the top, but ultimately decided to let the natural light shine in.

Design View

I was able to capture some incredible images to work with for the composition. It was May and the wildflowers were in full bloom

The final pieces were printed on photographic paper and mounted on foam core.

I printed each artwork specifically for this show in a consistent size. I chose to print the artwork on aluminum, both for it’s reproductive quality also also for the contrast to the surroundings.]

The small diamond pieces are details from the larger triptych of the nesting birds.

The exhibit is topped off with small crystals in each window to catch that magical moment of sunlight.
