I’ll share a bit of my process by walking path that was taken to create “Into the Sun”.

As with most creative processes, it often starts with a spark…
Inspiration comes in many forms. Sometimes you see it coming, like the day I stepped into a Hall of Mirrors in San Antonio.

The creation of an image begins in the sketchbook and is developed into a line drawing.

Design view

Images are selected to fill the spaces. Photos are based not only on theme, subject matter, and location, but also for color, texture, value, and design.
I usually have some idea of the theme of the photos and go to my library of over 10,000 images that I’ve taken over the years and start culling out what I want to use.
I select the photos based not only on theme, subject matter, and location, but also for color, texture, value, and design.
I love to use images that have reflective qualities: water, prisms, sun rays.

Most of the photos for “Into the Sun” were captured in Alaska.

The process of transforming these images into something extraordinary begins with a technique developed over the last 10+ years.
As the photos are layered into the drawing; the imagery interacts to create the highlights, shadows, contours, and textures of the image.
More often than not, the first round of photo placement is a hot mess and I start over… but eventually as the process progresses, the image begins to emerge.
