The glimpses on the momentary surface
Reveal the tender slivers of our soul
And show us the shimmering not

The fragments become figments
Lingering just out of reach
They come cloaked in the light
Blinding us to the shadowed fringes

We will bend in our perceptions
As we brace for fragile artifacts
We will reach for the elusive memory
And wake to the illusion

The Artifacts Collection explores the intersections of memory, reality and perceptions. It’s about fragments and figments. It questions the reliability of our visions and seeks the ghosts on the fringes.

The visual of sheer curtains in an open window has always been ethereal in my mind’s eye. The imagery encourages us to drift in and out of the present lending to the dreamlike quality of the artwork. The shimmering images and ephemeral changes of light create a respite that reveals a glimpse into a place you may recognize but not quite remember.

As with my recent collections, the narrative that drives the imagery is original. The series took root several years ago when I wrote the first four lines of the prose on a trip to Colorado with my soul sisters. I didn’t know at the time what would come, but I collected the pieces and planted them. The prose slips in and out of present, past and future. It speaks to individual and collective entities, reality and illusion and ends with a vow that slips away two lines later. A powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of our visions.

The Shimmering Not

Beach photo was taken on Galveston Island at Christmas time. I’ve used dewey redbud blossoms and lone Goldfinch in the sheer flowing shapes.

The Momentary

Daisies often represent youth, hope and new beginnings. Momentary thoughts that fade and shift out of focus. These ideals are difficult to hold and can retreat in an instant. Much like a hummingbird’s appearance, here and then gone. Together they bring messages of joy and renewal and a reminder to live in the moment. Do you recall this moment? Does it conjure a retreating memory?

Tender Slivers Of Our Soul

I used an old family photo of a my great grandmother’s farmhouse in Indiana. The flowers are bi-colored irises mixed with ferns. The Swallowtail butterflies have always been special to me and remind me of my mother.

The Shadowed Fringes

This piece features photos of delicate prickly pear blooms. Reminding us that even the spiny cacti can offer a moment of delicate beauty, even for just an instant.

Brace For Fragile Artifacts

The visual of sheer curtains in an open window has always been ethereal in my mind’s eye. The imagery encourages us to drift in and out of the present lending to the dreamlike quality of the artwork. Be sure to watch for the turquoise tanager perched in the trees. Stair photo was taken at the Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio. Sparkling waters are Cypress Creek in Wimberley, Texas

Our Former Selves

There is an old folklore saying that, “When a cardinal appears in your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven.” Since this series is about past and present and the melding of our perceptions and memories, it makes sense (to me) to welcome other worldly visitors into the imagery. Photos were taken in Madrid and Segovia Spain.

Strangely, this piece only uses only two photos. The pillars are from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC.

Lingering

This piece features a dewy selection of photos taken of a stand of creekside bamboo.

Wake To The Illusion

I wrote the first four lines of the prose for this collection several years ago on a trip to Colorado with my soul sisters. I didn’t know at the time what would come. I collected the pieces and planted them. Sleep, spread, leap. Sometimes they take root and bloom. Photos were taken in Glenwood Springs Colorado at the height of the autumnal color during the afore mentioned trip. Be sure to look for the colorful Troupials in the folds...
