The Weight of What We Hold

We hold it up to the light,
turn it over and under.
It’s what we don’t know
that beckons the wonder.

We search for a reason,
and conjure the why,
guarding our touchstones
as the truth passes by.

It’s the thread that we grasp,
so delicately spun,
that tethers to knowing
when knowing is none.

We raise fragile walls,
and shelter in glass.
We crown our charms sacred
as their powers amass.

The temples are veiled,
their thresholds unclear.
Our idols are vapor,
yet still we draw near.

– L. Kell

Precious explores the human instinct to assign value, to elevate the ordinary into the sacred. Objects are placed within constructed environments that echo ceremonial spaces. Through framing, isolation, and presentation, they begin to transform.

The work questions where meaning resides. Is it inherent, or is it imposed? When something is elevated, protected, and preserved, it gathers weight because we decide it matters.

This instinct is tied to memory and belief. We hold onto charms, symbols, and signs as anchors in an uncertain world. We build narratives around them, reinforcing their importance until they feel immovable.

The accompanying poem reflects this tension. We turn things over in search of understanding, guarding what we believe to be true.
We build temples and crown objects with significance. Yet these constructions are fragile.

Within the collection, reverence and confinement exist side by side. What we cherish can also hold us captive. These structures not only protect and elevate, they also keep things out, reinforcing distance and deepening isolation. Belief can ground us, but it can also limit us, shaping not only what we value, but how we see and interact.

Precious invites a quiet reconsideration. Not of what we hold dear, but of why, and at what cost.
