DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition\, the work is not a destination\, but a point of departure. Above & Beyond brings together ten artists who inhabit the vital space where material reality gives way to something more profound. This collection is a study of transcendence: the act of rising above a medium’s physical properties and reaching beyond the visible to capture the essence of the human spirit. \nAcross these eleven distinct practices\, a shared language of transformation emerges. Whether through the textured weight of sculpture or the fluid energy of a painting\, these works function as “visual events” rather than static objects. They reject the silence of a flat surface\, choosing instead to occupy a landscape of rhythm\, light\, and depth. \nThe exhibition explores the constant tension between structure and instinct—the desire to build\, to order\, and to contain\, set against the impulse to surrender to the subconscious. By emphasizing the tactile and the sensory\, these works invite a “slow looking” that reveals the hidden layers of our shared existence. Open Canopy allows you to step into their creative sanctuaries\, offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at their artistic process. This is your chance to explore their inspiration\, techniques\, and passion for their craft. \nArt aficionados will find a diverse range of original artwork available for purchase\, and many artists are open to accepting commissions\, allowing you to bring your unique vision to life through their talents. \nSince its launch in August 2021\, Open Canopy routinely welcomes an astonishing 200 plus visitors at each event. We’re thrilled to continue introducing new art enthusiasts to the wonder of Canopy and the broader Austin creative scene. \nIn addition to artist studios\, Canopy houses the Ivester Gallery and ICOSA Gallery\, creating an immersive art experience that extends beyond the studios. After a captivating artistic journey\, visitors can relax at Sa Ten\, where they can enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat. \nCanopy is a vibrant\, redeveloped East Austin warehouse\, transformed into a creative community.
