About the artist

Leslie Kell, multimedia artistLeslie Kell is an artist and designer whose career has spanned more than 30 years in the Austin area. She attended East Texas State University and has a degree in art. While she began her journey as a painter and illustrator, she has spent her career as a freelance graphic designer. Through her experience with photoshop and interest in photography, Leslie found herself enjoying the contemporary medium of digital art as a vehicle of her artistic expression. Leslie offers a slightly different view of the world using the color, texture and patterns of the environmental elements she captures with her camera. She photographs locations and events then creates her mirror-mad images based on those themes.

She was honored to be included in the 2012, 2014 and 2015 People’s Gallery at Austin City Hall. Currently, her works can be found hanging in various venues and juried shows around the state. She continues to work as a graphic artist and accepts commissions for custom artwork. Leslie currently serves as the President of the Austin Creative Arts Society.

About the art

The More you Look, The More You See
My fine art digital photo collages are created using a technique that I have been developing for the last 8 years. Recently, I’ve been working with architectural forms to create virtual environments in which my photographic images are assembled into the spaces and patterns of my designs. As the photos are layered and manipulated, they interact to create the highlights, shadows, contours, and textures of the artwork.

Much of my work mixes natural with architectural components. The manner in which these elements interact and contrast, both in their essence and origins, helps create the alternate reality that I seek. I also use recurring themes of water, light, and reflection. The angle of a light beam or a fleeting reflection ignites a spark as it passes through our awareness. The desire to capture that instant sensation before it flickers away is part of my inspiration. Most of my artwork also features a winged soul of some kind. Whether it’s a perched butterfly or a bird taking flight across the virtual sky, they are there to remind us of the fragility of the moment.

Because each piece may use up to a dozen photographs, there is always something to discover. The photography is done at various locations and is selected based on a theme, location, color, or texture. After the initial impression of the artwork is experienced, there are layers and layers of images to be uncovered within the composition. When people stand before my work and utter surprising exclamations and discover the images that wait in sub-layers, I feel that I’ve been successful.

The Process
This is not where the story ends though. Once the painstaking digital process is complete, a mixed media piece is created that brings the digital composition into the real world. An archival canvas is printed and paint and textural elements are added. While I enjoy the precise digital construction process, adding the unpredictable and spontaneous paint splatters seems to further cement the image on this side of the computer screen. Anything can happen, and that makes each piece unique and original. Finally, the artwork is finished with three-dimensional accents to create a sculptural presentation that reaches beyond the bounds of the canvas.

The Collections
The works are grouped into collections based on a favorite artist or song. Then each piece is named from a lyrical phrase relating to the collection theme. Each also carries with it a 6-digit date code that commemorates the day of creation, not necessarily the finish date.

While the images are digital in their beginnings, as you can see, the final product is a crafted original.
Once a design is printed and enhanced, it is not reproduced in the same way again. Each mixed media piece is an authentic, one-of-a-kind creation.

I once heard a juror say: “There is no substitute for the physical encounter.” I’d like to think that my artwork is a physical, even spiritual encounter. I hope to achieve a sense of wonder, movement and maybe even a whisper of sound.
